The first seven chapters of this book deal with these seven problems in turn. Chapters 8 and 9 then provide a solution (begun in chapter 7) to the mind-body problem, focusing on consciousness and on freedom, respectively.

Arthur Schopenhauer Essay - 860 Words.

Schopenhauer’s biggest fallacy is his belief that the human mind is a mindless machine, taking in information without any consideration and analysis of the information. However, the primary function of a book is to force a reader to analyze the ideas it has to offer. If everyone were to accept all the various ideas circulating in our world’s library, then there would be no basis for debate.

His opus, The World as Will and Idea, was published in 1818 and revised in 1844. Parerga and Paralipomena (Greek for Appendices and Omissions, 1851), was his final major work and contained his popular writings, aphorisms and essays. Schopenhauer was influenced by Kant and rejected the ideas of Hegel and proofs for the existence of God and immortality. He was also influenced by Buddhism.

These essays are a valuable criticism of life by a man who had a wide experience of life, a man of the world, who possessed an almost inspired faculty of observation. Schopenhauer, of all men, unmistakably observed life at first hand. There is no academic echo in his utterances; he is not one of a school; his voice has no formal intonation; it is deep, full-chested, and rings out its words.

Only by flagrantly ignoring the evidence of these essays have the published authorities been able to manufacture their kaleidoscope of garbled historical interpretations, i.e., to suppose and infer the most variegated of possible influences, and to proffer their arbitrary judgments on the origins, intent, and content of Schopenhauer's philosophy as if these were the best available substitute.
